Influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and, in some cases, death. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that between 5 and 20 percent of U.S. residents get the flu every year, and that more than 200,000 people are hospitalized for flu-related complications each year. Because the flu is a contagious respiratory illness, the virus can easily spread throughout schools, offices, healthcare facilities and other places where people gather.
