In this course, we will discuss how adaptive equipment can be used to help the people you serve and
show examples of the adaptive equipment you will often encounter on the job.

Aging begins at birth and ends at death. If you understand how the body ages, you can assist the
individuals you support age in the healthiest way possible. This course walks direct support professionals
through the different changes that occur as the body matures, and focuses on some unique aspects of
aging in the DD/ID community. In this course, we will discuss aging and the special needs of the elderly.
You will learn about the aging process and how to help individuals with intellectual and developmental
disabilities age in the healthiest way possible.

In this course, you will learn the responsibilities involved with becoming a caregiver and how to cue,
coach and assist residents with various tasks and activities of daily living.

For most of us, home represents security and independence so when asked about their preference for
housing, most seniors will respond that they’d like to remain in their homes. Unfortunately, that isn’t
always possible so, instead, assisted living facilities become an option for helping people cope with their
declining abilities. In this course you will learn the responsibilities involved with becoming a caregiver
and how to assist residents with various tasks and activities of daily living.

There has been a recent resurgence in bedbug infestations worldwide, particularly in developed
countries, including the United States. Although having bed bugs is not generally considered a health
threat, living with them can be a traumatic experience and properly eliminating bed bugs is a timeconsuming
and expensive task. This course focuses on providing the basic information that is needed to
control bed bugs, as well as teaching you how to identify and prevent bed bug infestations.

The Environmental Protection Agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the United
States Department of Agriculture consider bed bugs a public health pest. Because of this, and because of
the ease at which bed bugs can travel from location to location, it’s important for senior care
professionals, child care workers and the general public to have some information about these pests.

Bloodborne pathogens (microorganisms that are carried in your bloodstream) can cause various,
dangerous diseases in humans. As a care worker, you need to know how to keep yourself and the
people you work with safe from these hazardous organisms.

In this course, students will learn about bloodborne pathogens. We will review the various types of
bloodborne pathogens as well as transmission, exposure, protection and prevention. We will also offer
methods for responding if you are exposed to blood or body fluids.

The CDC estimates that more than 16 million people in the United States are living with cognitive
impairment, making cognitive impairment and dementia a vital training topic for senior care workers. In
this course, you will learn about cognitive impairment and how it relates to dementia and Alzheimer’s
disease as well as how it is detected. We'll also discuss the differences between the changes associated
with normal aging and cognitive impairment and offer methods for treating and supporting those with
cognitive difficulties.

As the body ages, it is more prone to diseases and disorders that require drug therapies. In this course,
senior care workers will learn what types of medications are the most common among the aging
population, as well as why and how each of those medications should be taken.

In this module we will discuss the common types of medications people need as they get older. With
age, our use of certain medicines will increase as we encounter a greater need to treat the ailments that
occur as a result of aging. If used correctly, medication can be taken to ease, control or cure these
ailments and can be a safe and effective form of treatment.

Communicable diseases can be viral, bacterial, fungal or parasitic--oh my! This training will detail the
different types of communicable diseases, how they can be prevented, and how to respond when you or
someone you interact with is diagnosed with a communicable disease.
In this course, you will learn about communicable diseases. We will cover what they are, how to prevent
them and how to respond to them.

Providing assistance is the essence of your job as a senior care worker. One area that you will need to
assist in is the administration of medication. This course teaches senior care workers the responsibilities
involved with becoming a caregiver and how to cue, coach and assist residents with the selfadministration
of medication.

Senior care workers often work with residents who have dementia. This course gives an overview of
dementia and discusses several of the common forms of dementia and the symptoms associated with
each form.
In this training course, you will learn about the different types of dementia, including Alzheimer's
disease. Dementia, a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily
life, is a broad term that describes a wide range of symptoms, all of which will be discussed throughout
the course. We will also address the treatment options available and offer a variety of methods for
supporting the people in your care.

In this course, we will take an in-depth look at depression and the various ways it affects individuals. We
will review how many people are affected by depression, discuss what causes it, learn who is at risk, and
identify the signs that may lead you to suspect when someone is depressed.

Dysphagia is a swallowing disorder that can require significant lifestyle adaptations. This course will
outline the different specialized diets for individuals with choking problems, as well as cover the physical
and environmental considerations that can minimize the chances of a choking incident.

In this course, you will learn how to best support people with dysphagia. We will discuss dietary needs
for individuals with choking problems as well as the physical and environmental considerations that can
minimize the chances of choking while eating.

Because the elderly are often dependent on others for their care, they can be targets for abuse, neglect
and exploitation. Further, because victims of elder mistreatment rarely seek help or report the problem,
it falls on care givers to always be on the lookout for abuse of any kind. In this course we will discuss
common types of abuse faced by the elderly and discuss the importance of awareness, the first step in
the prevention of this type of abuse.

Because the world around us is rapidly changing and the workforce is more diverse than ever,
organizations need to understand diversity and how it affects employees and outside perception.
Employers that invest in cultural diversity training will see a number of benefits, including improved
employee relations and higher morale and retention. This training course explores the ideas behind
diversity, the benefits of a culturally diverse workplace, and why it can be difficult to implement
diversity initiatives.

What should you do in the case of a natural disaster? When is it necessary for you to evacuate the
assisted living facility? The answers to these questions should be in the facility's Emergency Disaster
Plan, and this course is a good start for senior care workers to learn what is expected during an
emergency situation.

In this training course, we will discuss what goes into the planning process for creating an emergency
plan for your facility. Throughout this course, we will discuss the factors to consider when deciding how
to act in an emergency situation and what is expected and required of assisted living facilities in
Maryland.

Fire safety and prevention is important and should be practiced by everyone. This course covers the
special considerations of direct care workers who work with those who are vulnerable or disabled.
This program includes fire prevention and what to do in the event of a fire. We also discuss common
types of fires, risk factors and emergency preparedness measures with special attention given to the
specific considerations of the direct care worker in the field.

The core principle of fundamental rights states that each individual has, "the right to be treated with
courtesy, respect, and full recognition of human dignity and individuality." In this course, you will learn
what fundamental rights are and why they are so important. We will also discuss different ways to
support the individuals in your care when it comes to exercising these rights.

In this course, we will talk about HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.
We will discuss ways to protect patient information, as well as consequences for failing to protect
confidential information. By the end of this course, you will be able to:

• State why HIPAA is important
• Describe non-compliance consequences
• Explain Protected Health Information (PHI)
• Identify the 7 Patient Privacy Rights

Influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and, in some cases, death. The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention estimate that between 5 and 20 percent of U.S. residents get the flu
every year, and that more than 200,000 people are hospitalized for flu-related complications each year.
Because the flu is a contagious respiratory illness, the virus can easily spread throughout schools, offices,
healthcare facilities and other places where people gather.
This course explains the flu virus and how it spreads. We’ll also cover influenza symptoms, treatment
and prevention, including tips for staying healthy.
